Arizona Handyman License Requirements
Arizona's small-job figure is $1,000. The exact wording below decides whether a job fits.
A.R.S. 32-1121(A)(14): aggregate contract price on one undertaking/project by one or more contracts 'is less than $1,000' (strictly under $1,000; $1,000.00 requires a license); work must be 'of a casual or minor nature'; exemption lost if a local building permit is required, if the work is part of a larger operation or split into contracts under $1,000 to evade, or if advertising does not include the words 'not a licensed contractor'.
What counts toward it: labor+materials (aggregate contract price 'including labor, materials and all other items', excluding certain plug-in/low-voltage manufacturer appliances or fixtures)
"Any person other than a licensed contractor engaging in any work or operation on one undertaking or project by one or more contracts, for which the aggregate contract price, including labor, materials and all other items,"

Does Arizona license general and residential work?
the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) licenses all contractors, issuing separate commercial, residential and dual licenses by trade classification; residential remodeling/repair requires an ROC license unless the handyman exemption (A.R.S. 32-1121(A)(14)) applies.

When a permit changes the answer
Yes - the exemption 'does not apply ... In any case in which the performance of the work requires a local building permit' (A.R.S. 32-1121(A)(14)(a)); ROC: a license is required if a permit is required 'regardless of the price of labor and materials'.

Registration
No separate handyman registration. Exempt persons who advertise must include 'not a licensed contractor' in every advertisement. Licensed residential/dual contractors must also either post an additional $200,000 bond or participate in (pay assessment to) the Residential Contractors' Recovery Fund (A.R.S. 32-1152(C)).
Trade work
Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and other trades are licensed as ROC contractor classifications (commercial/residential/dual), not via separate state trade boards. Handyman exemption does not cover work needing a permit, which typically includes most electrical/plumbing/mechanical work.

Insurance and bond
License bonds (A.R.S. 32-1152): general residential contractors $5,000-$15,000; specialty residential contractors $1,000-$7,500 (amount set by ROC rule based on volume); commercial bonds scale with estimated annual volume (see A.R.S. 32-1152(B)(1)-(3)). Residential/dual licensees also: $200,000 additional bond OR Recovery Fund assessment.

City and county rules
Contractor licensing is state-level (ROC); cities issue building permits and may require local business/privilege tax licenses.
