South Dakota Handyman License Requirements

South Dakota has no statewide general contractor license for this work, so local and trade rules decide.

No statewide general license
South Dakota

No state general/handyman contractor license exists, so no dollar exemption threshold. DOR: 'Any person entering into a contract for construction services ... or engaging in services that include the construction, building, installation, or repair of a fixture to real property must have a South Dakota contractor's tax license' (2% excise tax on gross receipts). Electrical and plumbing for hire require state licenses regardless of job size (owner-occupant exceptions only).

What counts toward it: other: no dollar threshold - there is no state general contractor license to be exempt from; the excise tax license applies to any person contracting for construction services regardless of job size (no small-job exemption found)

"or engaging in services that include the construction, building, installation, or repair of a fixture to real property must have a South Dakota contractor's tax license. The excise tax imposed on the gross receipts for construction projects is at a rate of 2%."
