Handyman License Requirements in Edison, NJ

New Jersey does not have a dollar-threshold handyman exemption—all residential home improvement work requires state registration with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs regardless of project value. Contractors must register with the state ($110 initial, $90 renewal), obtain general liability insurance and a surety bond, and comply with Edison Township zoning requirements. Trade-specific work (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) requires separate state licenses. Edison Township does not impose a separate contractor business license, and Middlesex County defers to state licensing.

⚠️ What Requires a Contractor License

The following work requires a state-issued contractor license in NJ. Performing this work without a license exposes you to fines, stop-work orders, and civil liability:

• Any electrical work beyond simple fixture replacement (new circuits, panel work, rewiring, installing new outlets on new circuits)
• Any plumbing work beyond like-for-like fixture replacement (new supply lines, drain modifications, water heater installation, gas line work)

State Contractor Licensing Law (NJ)

Permit vs. Contractor License — The Legal Difference

A LICENSE is your credential to perform work—it proves you are qualified and registered. A PERMIT is authorization from the local government to perform specific work on a specific property. In New Jersey, you need BOTH. You must hold an active HICB registration (state license) to legally perform home improvement work for compensation. Additionally, most home improvement projects require a building permit from Edison Township before work begins.
